The Edible Books event was originally created by librarian Judith A. Hoffberg to celebrate the birthday of Jean Brillat-Savarin, the author of "Physiologie du goût, a witty meditation on food". People typically celebrate the event by making baked goods and/or edible foods based on, or around, books! Since 2001, on or around April 1st, UC Libraries has participated in the event.
When you first hear ‘Edible Books’ you think, “Are they eating books??”. That’s exactly what my thought process was as well, and it is what I went forward with for the visual identity.
The treatment of the text layouts is this grid of books that have bites taken out of them, which creates the space for the text and logos. The books reminded me of bricks on a house so I laid them out in that same overlapping fashion. I made it a 45 degree angle so that when the text is applied, it creates more interesting and different shapes in the books with bites.

UC Libraries was my first co-op. Because of this, I had a lot of projects that didn’t have as much process work that you would typically see from me now. I am still proud of my work, so I put together this collection of display case exhibits, flyers, stickers, and t-shirts!
Hispanic Heritage Month is from September 15th to October 15th. The exhibit covers statistics about Hispanic people living in the United States and also features a collection of books about Hispanic culture by Hispanic authors (bibliography). There are two foam boards on the outside of the exhibit that covers the poem, 'Yo soy Joaquin' by Rodolfo Corky Gonzales and the Chicano Civil Rights Movement (pdfs here).
The typefaces I chose are Basic Sans and Mixta Didonne Alt which are both done by a Chilean typeface foundry, Latinotype.
How the exhibit is laid out in the display case. The blank white is where the books about Hispanic Culture, by hispanic authors are.
Provided with information from the Women in Engineering Trailblazers and the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, I made a timeline of the History of Women in CEAS. The timeline covers significant events in the college, the formation of associations and groups, engineering co-op history, and the first time a woman has received that degree from 1920-2022.
Despite colors having no significance in determining gender, it is hard to escape the ‘boy means blue and girl means pink’ when it comes to gender. That is why I made a point not to use the color pink while making this exhibit.
UC Libraries gives out stickers to students all the time. I made this silly little Triceracopter sticker on a whim and it has become wildly popular. Every semester now, UC Libraries has to order 1,000+ stickers to keep up with the demand!
I was tasked with designing a t-shirt for all UC Library staff to wear. I made a lot of iterations and had to navigate UC's brand standards for apparel.
